چکیده

I nternetworking services have come a long way since their inception in basic communication between two homogeneous computers located not far from each other. Today, intelligent devices can interact with each other anytime and anywhere in the world. Recent advances in technology—especially in wireless communication—have fueled the market for such devices. At the same time, decreasing processor costs and size let engineers endow ever more devices with application-specific processing power. These trends are moving toward the vision of pervasive computing. Home networks represent a step along this path. As the name suggests, a home network interconnects various electronic devices within a house. In cases where the home network connects to a broadband local loop, it can also make these devices accessible over the Internet, opening the door to new applications that rely on remote network administration. The requirements that drive a home network differ from those for an enterprise network. For one thing, a home network must handle interference from household appliances such as microwave ovens and cordless phones. Second, given the lack of system administrators in the home, the network must operate with little or no user intervention. At the same time, it must meet the challenge of structure and usage variances among in-home devices. Current devices vary greatly from each other and from one household to another with respect to models, make, and quantity. Their purposes range from washing clothes to controlling room humidity. A home network allows all such appliances to communicate with one another. Thus, it needs a technology that can seamlessly integrate assorted devices into a monolithic communication network.

Jini Supporting Ubiquitous and Pervasive Computing

The overall purpose of this article is partly to give a brief overview of the TangO conceptual model, partly to explore the Jini technology as a means for support of pervasive systems in general and the TangO conceptual model in particular, and to emphasize the advantages and weaknesses of the Jini technology for ubiquitous computing. We will validate our survey of the Jini Technology against t...

Design and Implementation of SONICA (Service Oriented Network Interoperability for Component Adaptation) for Multimedia Pervasive Network

Recent advances in multimedia network systems have led to the development of a new generation of applications that associate the use of various multimedia objects. The connection of audio and video devices through high speed multimedia pervasive networks will make the use of these systems more convenient. For example, many home appliances, such as video cameras, display monitors, video recorder...

Evaluation of SONICA Compared with UPnP and Jini

The current move towards a ubiquitous network society is encouraging companies to develop various items in preparation for networking. Accordingly, home appliances that operate by themselves are beginning to be equipped with communication interfaces, and these appliances are leading the way and illustrating next generation services. Thus, some platforms for constructing home networks have been ...

Integration of Limited Servers into Pervasive Computing Environments Using Dynamic Gateway Services

Designing small servers for pervasive computing environments is a difficult task: On the one hand, they often must be as cheap and small as possible and are hence limited in their computing resources. On the other hand they must join networking communities that use complex and resource consuming service discovery mechanisms and middleware technologies. In order to solve this conflict, we introd...

ion. There is a mismatch with the low-level technologies and the high-level requirements. Even the advanced home network middleware such as Jini or UPnP are not adequate to fulfil all requirements. There are powerful tools at a programmer level, but they cannot be used by end-users. A piece of work has to wrap those technologies to give a global view of the home network, including all that is p...
